‘Mustang Sally…’ The Commitments, Orchard Theatre, Dartford. 13.03.2023
What better way to get you excited for St Patricks day, than an invite to see the opening night of The Commitments at Orchard Theatre.
Based on the 1991 film of the same name, The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who transforms an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, which becomes the finest soul band in Dublin. I wasn’t aware of the story simple to follow what won the crowd over was by far the music and the many intervals of a concert by a top leading cast. With songs that every one loves, ‘Mustang Sally’ ‘Try a Little Tenderness’ ‘Proud Mary’ Just to name a few each song sung had you tapping your feet or full on dancing in your seat!
What I love is that the whole cast performed all music on stage, with each character leading on their instrument performing live along with singing, dancing and acting and all of them did it with ease! James Killen leads his band throughout the production, his passion for the show and for the role was clearly displayed and he showed a warming side to the manager that really cared about the band. Leading vocals goes to Deco played by alternate James Deegan, who has an amazing set of pipes and slayed each solo and song he delivered. He also really knows how to work an audience to ensure that they are having a great time – this in particular was towards the end of the production, he was a lot of fun!
Supporting the band, stand out performances to me came from Guy Freeman plays the loveable if somewhat innocent Derek, who was a crowd favourite with his brilliant comic moments. Stuart Reid as Joey also was fantastic to watch and his many relationships with ‘the Commitettes’ – bringing girl power to the band, Ciara Mackey, Eve Kitchinman, and Sarah Gardiner as Imelda, Natalie, and Bernie were able to shine on stage with their many solo’s and ensure that they could show their fantastic vocals and amazing dance moves!
Going in with no expectations was a great way to approach this show, my plus one said it was very close to that of the film but hearing the music live just made it that little bit extra and this was clearly demonstrated with the many people up on their feet and having a dance off while the band played its most popular tunes. At times it felt that we were at a concert, with some audience participation that was highly encouraged. I came away fully entertained and blown away by some amazing musical talent, a guaranteed great night out for all to enjoy and take something from!
