All I Need is…’ Six the Musical, Vaudeville Theatre, London 04.11.2023
Now this musical is one that I had been desperate to see, but due to its high demand the chance of a press night was slim – because it sold, very well! Then with a little one to look after a trip to London was slim too, but this year I was getting married…and when you get married the bride has a hen do. I was just fortunate to have two, and thanks to my amazing colleagues, I was finally going to see Six the musical! What better way then to spend your work Hen do, than learning about the married lives of Henry VII’s six wives right?
Well all know the rhyme – Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived, but tonight the six wives take their microphones to reclaim their identities out of the shadow of their infamous spouse – bringing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a Euphoric Celebration of 21st century girl power! What is not to love? Written excellently by Toby Marlow & Lucy Moss, the musical itself is 80 minutes long, without an interval and from the moment the queens step onto the stage you are lost in their power of Song! You are uplifted by each song they sing to take their place as the top queen, I myself was very disciplined in not listening to the full soundtrack except know of those that were performed at variety shows and award shows such as ‘Ex-Wives’ and of course ‘Six,’ so I came in fresh and im so happy I did! Each song perfectly accompanied their queen and had a wide variety of styles and themes. But this wouldn’t of been, it if was not for the queens themselves.
We were fortunate to see the leading ladies as the queens this night Nikki Bentley warms up the crowd as Catherine of Aragon with ‘No Way’ even with the opening number, her performance stayed with me till the very end – it is regular in my car. The Therese Nguyen and Inez Budd the beheaded sisters Anne Boylyn and Katherine Howard also slayed at their solo’s ‘Don’t Loose your Head’ and ‘All You Wanna Do’ they brought a light hearted and comic song to life but yet ensured their true message in the lyrics were heard – especially Inez Budd in her final verse where you can see how Katherine Howard was truly treated. Jane Seymour’s solos is one I had not glimpse of prior to seeing this musical and Kayleigh McKnight blew me away with her version ‘Heart of Stone’ that I was stunned at just how beautiful her voice was – especially with every high note that she knocked out into the audience, I could have listened to that over and over all night. Then we have Reca Oakley and Janiq Charles as Anne Of Cleves and Catherine Parr, each bringing style and power to their queens that complemented the rest greatly.
All the queens on stage look like they are having such a fun time – that they are so truley blessed to be bringing this show to life for so many audiences in London and they make sure that the audience get a afternoon or evening well spent! Along with their backing queens the band – a full female band – sisterhood and girl power excels within this show that shows they deserved the many awards that they have won.
