‘I’d Rather Be Me…’ Mean Girls the Musical – Savoy Theatre, London 11.01.2025
It had been a while, actually over 2 years since I had, had the opportunity to enjoy a 2 show day, Something I loved doing when Graham was away before my little one was born – it is hoped she will join me in the future! But, when my friend suggested another show following a pretty epic matinee – it wasn’t going to be a no! We researched every show we would be happy to see and the winner was – Mean Girls playing at the Savoy theatre.
Mean Girls is a brand new rock musical written by comedian Tina Fey, who also wrote the 2004 teen comedy film that the musical is based on. It tells the story of Cady, recently moved to Illinois, USA from the savannah plains of Afria with her mum. Excited to finally be surrounded by her own kind, the need to fit in is top of the agenda and stumbles across towards ‘The Plastics’ the popular trio led by Regina George. But, are they her true friends or does Cady not realised what she has in front of her Janis and Damian? The film itself has grown you could say a little bit of a cult following, with many knowing the quotes that many still stay today ‘October 3rd’ ‘You can’t sit with us’ and ‘she doesn’t even go here’ spring to mind when ever I think of the film. Happy to say with a few tweaks, the musical itself stays true to the film allowing the fans to enjoy a new take on a favourite. Song and lyrics by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin, bring new life into the story with some good songs ‘Where Do you Belong’ ‘Stupid in Love’ and especially ‘I’d Rather be Me’ were personal favourites and I loved each scenerio surrounding each of the songs.
The musical itself was entertaining and very enjoyable to watch, I did however noticed a few references that were similar to musical ‘Heathers’ which it is sad the film is loosely based upon as an upgrade to the cult classic. It will be interested to see how it grows and whether it will be similar to the following Heathers has today.
The cast tonight were on fire, tonight in the role of Cady was understudy Cliona Flynn, who portrayed the role (originated by Lynsey Lohan) perfectly with an innocent yet powerful attitude. Her growth within the story was excellently displayed and the audience was with her every step of the way. Her two back ups, Janis and Damian played by Elena Skye and Tom Xander looked like genuine best friends – and whose to say they are not. But, they looked like they were having a great time performing and being the classic duo that everyone loves. They bounced of each other well for the classic comic moments and Elena’s solos were phenomenal and I really loved watching her.
Then there are the plastics, Regina, Gretchen, and Karen played by Georgina Castle, Elena Gyasi, and Grace Mouat, were cast perfectly Georgina was the perfect evil B**** and it was as if it was a role she was born to potray as she just suited every piece of the puzzle. Elena was a brilliant, and her take on Gretchen was real and genuine as the desperate for friendship and acceptance from Regina yet insecure at heart which was clearly displayed through her renditions of What’s Wrong With Me? Something every teen girl can relate to at some point! Then there was the not so much up there Karen, Grace excelled at the ditzy character and greatly deserved the many laughs and cheers she received throughout the night. Kind of gutted thought this Karen, can’t predict the weather – if you know you know.
There is no denying that when you come to see Mean Girls you will get the film you love on stage, though if you haven’t seen the film you will be introduced to it in musical perfection and a lot of Pink! You will laugh, but also reflect as it is a story that most can relate to – which is why it is such a popular one to head to.
